The project addresses the generic character of the constructed urban environment, in the context of diversity and changing life patterns. The same generic character exists in old urban environments as well as young ones, as I discovered in my research of generic residential neighborhood in central Israel. The importance of this generic character stems from the dichotomy between repetitiveness and generality on the one hand, and the ability to include diversity on the other. The same basic laws that endow the environment with a uniform, nonspecific appearance can be used as a foundation to create freedom and a multiplicity of opportunities. The explored area of intervention is the Bat Yam industrial zone, within a generic environment that includes the potential for different possibilities and uses, places and situations. Based on the "old" generic and a combination of a "new" generic, the project presents an integration of programs of several lifestyles and life opportunities in the industrial zone, thus transforming it into a vibrant area anchored by features from the past and enriched by the features of the future.
