The project “Without Borders” presents a renewed vision of the military base as an open, democratic space integrated within the urban fabric. Its point of departure is the Sirkin Base- a historic military site in central Israel, adjacent to the Kfar Sirkin neighborhood and a new residential development planned to rise on its grounds. Rather than demolishing the base or isolating it behind fences, the project proposes transforming it into a new model of an “Open Instructional Base”- a system of spaces that enables coexistence between military and civilian life, between education and defense, between past and future. Emerging from an utopian vision of rethinking the relationship between the military and the city, the project imagines a reality in which boundaries dissolve- the army becomes part of the civic environment, not as a separating force but as an open, educational, and participatory institution. The base is designed as an open tissue without fences, functioning like a university campus integrated into the city. It combines training facilities, technological laboratories, and shared gathering spaces for soldiers and civilians. The project aims to dismantle the physical and symbolic border separating the military system from civil society, and to develop a new model of sustainable, future-adaptive military planning that can evolve into civilian use over time. The proposal engages with the existing historic structures on site, preserving them as part of a Heritage Center (“Past, Present, Memory, Future”) and integrating them into the new design. This layering of time and meaning creates a place where history coexists with innovation- a military base reimagined as an open, green, and inviting environment, a utopian vision of space without borders.
