“Here is the sea in front of us” “We came back to Jaffa, this is the Manshiya neighborhood” Al Manshiya neighborhood is one of the largest Palestinian neighborhoods in Jaffa that was occupied by the IDF in 1948. Its residents were deported by sea to Gaza, Egypt and refugee camps in Lebanon, Jordan, and the West Bank. The neighborhood was mostly destroyed with the lives and dreams of its residents that their identity was erased. The traumas and the difficult experiences of the people were deeply hidden, the voices were silenced and covered with a green grass. The project seeks to revive the Palestinian identity of the area that known now as Charles Clair Park, by focusing on the people themselves and the needs of Palestinian families from the West Pank, Jaffa, and Jerusalem, who are returning to visit Manshiya, and Palestinian youths who are staying there. The project gives them space to retrieve and recording the memory of collective trauma they have experienced and restores their right to the land. The planning of the space will be done with the participation of the families that visiting the site, while considering there needs, feelings and their temporary experience in the place, in order to give them a sense of homing, belonging and control over their destiny. A youth center designed for all young generation from Jaffa and Tel Aviv will unite them around their Palestinian identity through a variety of social, educational, leisure and enrichment activities, and will be used as a platform for self- expression and sharing the present experiences and remembering the past heritage of the parents and grandparents. The meeting between the visiting Palestinian families and the local youth is considered to be an optimistic meeting that refuses to eliminate a past of destruction and loss, focusing on the present and looks toward the future.
