Underground Airport in a Designed Landscape The project presents the design of an innovative airport in which all systems – terminals, operational zones, and commercial areas – are located beneath the surface, with only the runways exposed. Through meticulous topographic design, a quiet, minimalist landscape is formed, integrating the airport into a harmonious environment that minimizes noise and visual disturbance. Located in northern Israel, the project responds to a strategic security need to protect the national aviation network. The underground layout offers a resilient and concealed solution to contemporary threats, while the surface above remains open, featuring a park, green areas, and public gathering spaces. Excavation exposes the site’s natural rock layer, which becomes an integral part of the architectural envelope—both as a material and as a structural element. Above ground stretches a large public park with walking paths, rest areas, an aviation museum, a restaurant, and shaded pavilions—an accessible urban landscape where surface calm and subterranean depth coexist in balance.
